Chapter Five

Chris lived in a penthouse on Central Park West. Naomi accompanied him to it after they left the diner where they’d had a late dinner. After her stomach let out an embarrassing rumble, she’d been forced to confess she hadn’t eaten anything in over fourteen hours.

“You’re a doctor, you, of all people, should know better,” Chris scolded her. “Why didn’t you grab something on the train?”

“A bad episode with an egg salad sandwich put me off train food for life. But I normally don’t go this long without eating, usually grabbing something from the hospital cafeteria during a lull. Your summoning me to New York threw me off schedule.”

“Then let me make it up to you. I’ll take you to my favorite restaurant in all five boroughs.”

Naomi looked down at the navy business suit and pink shell blouse she wore. Appropriate enough dress for meeting with a BCG representative to discuss a donation to the ER. But probably nowhere near dressy enough for whatever high end establishments a billionaire corporate president like Chris favored.

As if he could read her mind, Chris raised her hand to his lips and kissed it before he said, “You look beautiful, princess. You’ll fit in perfectly with the place I have in mind.”

When they first walked into the upper West Side diner, Naomi’s first thought had been that she was overdressed for the very casual dining restaurant. Most of the customers had on jeans and T-shirts. But then she got a whiff of her favorite greasy treat and all thoughts of clothes were erased from her mind.

“Are those onion rings I smell?” she asked. “If so, I want a double order of them.”

“Gorgeous, smart and she likes onion rings,” Chris murmured. “You really are my dream woman.”

The comment made her smile but her thoughts were still on those onion rings, especially after Chris told her they were beer-battered. They each devoured their own orders of them and split a third. There might have been some patty melts and chicken BLT’s too, Naomi couldn’t remember. The onion rings had been her main focus.

In fact, she still thought about them even as she walked through the spacious penthouse. Though tastefully decorated with furniture and art that clearly cost a fortune, the duplex had a sterile, unlived in feeling. When Naomi mentioned it, Chris nodded in agreement.

“I hardly ever spend any time here. When I’m not traveling on business, I sometimes sleep at the office when meetings or conference calls run late. After my financial advisor suggested I get this place a year ago, I hired an interior decorator and told him to do whatever he wanted.”

So that’s why the penthouse feels so devoid of personality or warmth, Naomi thought. To Chris, she said, “You might want to think about putting a picture or two on your mantelpiece. Anything to indicate an actual person lives here.”

Chris slid his arm around her waist. “Give me a picture of you and I’ll find a place to hang it with special flood lighting.
